Just finish watching Succession s3. This isn’t a proper review, just a collection of observations, hopefully without major spoilers -- though if you haven’t watched it at all it’ll probably be a bit confusing.
One of the brilliant elements of this show is how the meaning and character motivation can seem so clear to each viewer, and yet none of us seem to be watching the same show. So I’m not saying the threads I’ve read about the character’s politics, (or the show’s), are wrong, but the show I’m watching isn’t really about an ideology or even particular politics, except to the extent that everything in a family is about those things. The only thing that makes them not a typical family is the addition of billions of dollars of capital and the access and power that buys.
For example... Roman has convinced himself that he might just be able to make his dad happy, and he'd burn down a city or even an entire nation full of infants if that would do it. But he isn't on a baby killing crusade, he doesn't hate babies. When he realized he's wrong about his standing with his father, he's just as willing to turn on him. It isn't inconsistent. (There are also a couple subtle beats in the final episode that really expose just how terrified he is of his dad, which were perfectly performed and yet somewhat brutal to watch, but I digress).
